One of our Grow Your Own (GYO) students, Colin Nettles, received a Ford Family Scholarship. This scholarship will pay 90% of her college expenses until she completes her degree. Colin currently works at the Sagebrush Day Treatment Program.

“I feel incredibly lucky to have been able to go back to school at all, and I know it would not have been possible without the help of the GYO scholarship, combined with the enthusiastic support I’ve gotten from High Desert Education Service District." Colin said the GYO questions on the application helped to prepare her for her Ford interview.

For more information on GYO, contact Kathy McCollum at kathy.mccollum@hdesd.org

Karina Smith is a first-generation Latina leader receiving her Doctorate in Educational Leadership. Her passion in education -- and life experiences -- have inspired her to expand her research, exploring the influence of intersectionality on Latina educational leaders when seeking to break the glass ceiling and being mentored by white Leaders.

Karina is the Director of the Migrant Education Program and the High School Equivalency Program in Central Oregon and is the first Latina to obtain a Doctorate degree in Education in the region. Karina considers education and personal experiences to be the vehicles to challenge the status quo to dismantle inequities that limit minorities to access professional and personal opportunities when pursuing their ultimate career goals.
